This old stone village house is on two levels has been renovated to the owners'own high standards while keeping its traditional feel.
On the lower level there is a double bedroom with a separate bathroom. The bathroom has a bath and washing machine in it. The upper level comprises of a large living/room kitchen, a twin bedroom with two single beds, a second bathroom with shower and a loft with another two single beds. The large Living Room/Kitchen opens out onto the good-sized terrace and garden which also has an outside shower. From the terrace you have a view to the mountains and the sea.
The house is spacious, comfortable, safe for children and very well equipped. The kitchen has a cooker, fridge, coffee maker, kettle, toaster and everything you need to cook at home if you want to. From the house you can walk down to the center of the village where you will find a choice of three tavernas, two cafes, and several shops.
All sheets and towels including towels for the beach are provided.
You can park a car quite close to the house.
Please ask for more photos of the house and surrounding area.
Chios has flora, fauna, history countless villages, Ottoman ruins, Christian, ancient Greek and pre-Greek ruins and a plethora of beaches with clear seas to which to relax and swim in. Chios, the home of Mastic and much more! There is so much to see and so many places to explore that you will probably need to come back a few times.
The Genoese mansions and old fort villages are enough to keep you interested and that is just a part of historical Chios.
Birdwatchers come here too because of the migratory routes. We can supply you with a list of birds spotted on Chios and also put you in touch with other bird watchers. Another fascinating thing is that the most ancient of Chian wines - Ariousios - is now produced in the area around your host village of Volissos. Visits to the winery are possible.
The village is about an hour's drive from the city of Chios affording a view of the capital and the coast of Turkey on the inititial climb. The drive is through mountains and at one point you are so high that you sometimes pass through clouds in a strange barren landscape. As you drive further towards the village the sea will be on your left and you will see how many beaches there are waiting to be explored. The area around the village of Volissos is hilly and mountainess and there is a sea view from most of the higher parts of the village. The village centre has a butchers and bakers, a couple of tavernas, a pharmacy, and a couple of grocery shops. There is also a van which sells fruit and vegetables that comes to the village twice a week. Volissos also has a doctor, Post Office and an ATM machine.
Walk around the village up the roughly hewn paths and tracks through the steep lanes and under the vaulted houses and you will be glad that the village is not developed for tourists. Although some of the houses at Volissos have been renovated you will see a lot of ruined houses too which is much better than concrete blocks which have become ubiquitous in so many parts of Greece. Volissos is real. There are chickens in some of the yards or not (liberated chickens), cats and donkeys and owls, bats and frogs (as I saw on a rainy night) do not run the frogs over if you are in your car! You need a torch at night in parts of the village too. It is a delight as your house is fully equipped for modern expectations but you still have a sense of adventure here.
The small harbour of Limnia and beaches at Lefkathia and Limnos are about 2 km away. It is possible to walk of course but in the heat of the summer it will be a bit much every day especially with children as the village in on a hillside. The owners can help you arrange to rent a car or bike. Just a little further away is the 6 km long Managros beach. There are numerous beaches to choose from so you can always find a secluded spot from where to enjoy the crystal waters of the Aegean. Volissos has many tavernas (one taverna has an great owner/host/cook who really knows food and loves his job and all his guests but is not too proud to hear about new recipes from other parts of the world check out FABRIKA - the owners of your house will tell you where it is) to choose from either down at the harbour and beach or up in the village, offering you a wide choice of good, traditional Greek food. There are also two cafe-bars at the harbour where you can sip your Ouzo watching the fishing boats come and go while the sun slips below the horizon.
You can also go on a wine tour at the nearby vineyard where ARIOUSIOS wine is produced. Ask the owners for more details. This wine was produced in ancient times and was also know to the Romans. It is now being produced again and you can taste it. Please ask for more details.
If you are not tied to summer holiday dates consider Chios and Volissos in the Spring or in Autumn. I went to Volissos in mid October and enjoyed sun (beach weather),rain and storms which were all great as the location is so stunning. The main thing is to go though. This is for people who appreciate the real Greece, who love nature and are not afraid of a bit of exercise.
