Alonissos is an amazing island famous for its clean water and the green landscape, which characterises the islands of the Sporades group in general. Surrounded by pine trees, the beaches of Alonissos offer a picturesque environment to relax in.
Votsi, Chrissi Milia, Glyfa and Rousoum Gialos are the most famous beaches. Steni Vala is a small harbor, just across from Peristera Island. A sailing flotilla operates from here during the summer months and so the quay is a place of activity and ideal for watching the world go by.
The village of Steni Vala itself is an attractive place with a few tavernas and just a stone's throw from many good beaches.
When you need to stretch your legs there is a worthwhile museum to visit. This is housed in a bright new stone building to the left of the town beach. To get there go past the bars and tavernas behind the town beach and up the steps at the end. The door to the museum is up the steps. Exhibits are located on the lower ground, ground and first floor with a coffee shop on the second floor. There is a lift to all floors.
Also worth a visit are the sea cave where seals live... These are shy creatures, but if you are patient you may get lucky and spot one!
Don't forget your camera as Alonissos is a photoghrapher's paradise, from the early light bouncing quietly off the ancient white washed walls to the delicate pink hue of the late afternoon sun setting, your lens will be filled with wonder for every moment.
You may find it enjoyable to embark on a daily trip sailing around the island or to the deserted islands around.
There are also daily walking tours through the narrow winding pathways of the villages, discovering interesting architecture, the natives and their culture, donkeys and mules being led through the narrow paths from ocean to cliff side, a wealth of tradition.
Alonissos has so much to offer they days won't seem long enough...
Getting there
-------------
Alonissos has kept its unspoilt charm partly because it does not have an airport. It remains a well-kept secret, off the beaten track. Travelling to Alonissos involves a flight and a ferry/hydrofoil trip.
From May to October there are charter flights to Skiathos from most regional airports in the UK. Out of season travel is via Athens or Thessalonika.
From Athens there is a coach to Agios Konstantinos followed by a hydrofoil to Alonissos.
Alternatively, you can take an internal flight to Skiathos and then the hydrofoil to Alonissos. This is more usual during the summer months when people take advantage of very cheap flights to Athens and then fly on up to Skiathos.
BA and Olympic operate daily flight from Thessalonika and there are additional charter flights during the summer season. From Thessalonika there is a regular bus service to Volos which is our mainland port. From there you can pick up the hydrofoil/ferry. In the summer season there is a daily direct hydrofoil service from Thessalonika to Alonissos.
