The capital of Andros is a very picturesque town with traditional Cycladic architecture. There is an interesting Archaeological Museum wand a small but very good Museum of Modern Art which houses a collection of the local sculptor M. Tombros as well as works of the most important contemporary Greek artists. They also have regular exhibits of non-Greek modern artists. The museum is housed in a very pleasant building which harmonizes with the Cycladic architecture.
In modern times Andros has been the home island of many wealthy shipowners, in particular the various members of the Goulandris family. The Maritime Museum of Andros shows some of this tradition.
Batsi is located 7 kilometers away from Gavrio, separated from it by beautiful sandy beaches, small picturesque harbors and hidden coves.
Like Gavrio, Batsi used to be a fishing village. It has now widened it's horizens to discretely cater for a more international tastes whilst maintaining a traditional and picturesque charm.
This attractive town has little red-tiled colored houses which have been built amphitheatrically, and encircles a bay with a lovely fishing harbor at its south end and a nice sandy beach at the other side.
It has all the expected and necessary comforts for nice holidays: taverns, ouzo shops, night-time entertainment, tourist agencies, post office, bank, car and motorbike hiring agencies and many shops.
The Zoodochos Pigi Monastery can be reached from Batsi, as well as the little villages of Katakilos, Aprovatou, Arni and Ateni. A stepped path leads up to a green landscape of lush vegetation, sprouting along a watercourse.
It is an island with much to discover or simply to unwind lazing in the sun.
HOW TO GET TO ANDROS
The fastest way to get to Andros is by ferry from the port of Rafina, which is just 14km from Athens airport.
Most ferry routes combine Andros on the way to Tinos and Mikonos.
Getting to Rafina from Eleftherios Venizelos Airport can be done by taking the Markopoulo Exit then driving through Artemis and then heading for Rafina. This road avoids the compulsory tolls of the Attika superhighway (Attiki Odos) and is bound to have little or no traffic bottlenecks.
