Agia Marina is a resort village with a sandy beach and a pine forest.
It is a lively resort which attracts Greek and international clientele. There are all kinds of restaurants, cafes and bars offering all types of cuisine as well as music and dancing.
The beach is large and sandy, and is shallow for a good way out, making it safe and fun for children.
There are good local tavernas which sometimes put on 'Greek Nights' where you can participate.
If this is not for you the island also has ancient and more recent sites which are open to the visitor which include The Temple of Aphaia Athina which is was built in the Doric style from local limestone and is very well preserved. It is located 4km north of Agia Marina.
There is also a marvellous site near the monastery of Agios Nektarios called Palaiohora. It was the capital of the island from the 9th unitl the early 19th century.
There are ruins of a fair number of tiny churches while at the top of the hill are the ruins of the old castle which served as a refuge in the days when pirates used to raid the island.
Many Greek tourists visit the monastery of Agios Nektarios who is a modern saint having died in 1920 and who is now the patron saint of the island. There is a bus service which has a bus stop at the monastery and from where you can walk up to Palaiohora.
