The population of Agistri is just over one thousand although and so retains the charm of a Greek island lost in time whilst being so close to Piraeus/Athens.
There are only four charming villages on the island - Skala, Milos, Metochi and Limenari.
If you arrive feeling energetic then Agistri is an excellent place for swimming, snorkelling, fishing, water-skiing, windsurfing, volleyball and cycling. But for those who prefer less energetic activities aand enjoy alittle people watching thrown in there is or backgammon in many of the cafes on the island.
Agistri is perfect for those who like walking. A walk from Skala around the island to Limenaria and the deserted beach of Aponissos makes a wonderful day out and there are also beautiful tracks to follow in the pine forested interior of the island with some stunning views. The pine woods stay relatively cool but as the summer heat eases into everthing the smell ofthe pine sapasyour walk is just magical. Lumps of sap can be pulled off the tree (and chewed) and it is often collected with little metal cups tied to the trees.
But Agistri beaches are second to none. The main beach at Skala is sandy and has shallow crystal clear waters which makes it ideal for those with young children. If you feel inclined there is also a nudist beach just beyond the Agistri Club which became famous in the 1980s as the venue for the Adam and Eve Conference. For the more adventurous, there are numerous small beaches and deserted coves around the island tobe explored.
If you need to stretched you legs take an excursion to the nearby island of Aegina (20 minutes) which has a number of places of interest including the Temple of Aphaia, and the picturesque harbours of Souvala and Perdika.
The main town of Agina is also popular with tourists and the fish market and floating vegetable amarket are also well worth seeing.
Agistri is also well placed for short visits to other Saronic Islands such as Poros and Hydra, both of which are wellworth a visit. It is also possible to make one day excursions to the Acropolis in Athens or to the Ancient theatre of Epidavros. A sunset cruise around Agistri island is a perfect way to finish off the day.
As the saying goes location location, from this point of view Agistri has it all.
